PreSCRIBE SAFER resources
Supporting prescribing practice development
The purpose of this resources site is to support practitioners and educators in the development of safe and effective prescribing.
The key aims are to:
provide useful tools and resources to support and advance prescribing practice.
gain feedback from users and evaluate specific tools so they are of optimal benefit for prescribers.
facilitate information and resource exchange for prescribing practice.
This website offers a selection of resources and an opportunity to evaluate these.
The textbook "Principles and practice of nurse prescribing" (Gould and Bain, 2022) introduced a new prescribing consultation model ("RAPID-CASE"). This model aimed to enable prescribers or students to outline clear steps to prescribing decisions, and was made available for use and evaluation.
Following analysis of survey responses, the updated model PreSCRIBE SAFER is now available.
The content is based on 4 themes:
Theme 1: Professional Legal & Ethical context
Theme 2: Assessment and consultation
Theme 3: Pharmacology
Theme 4: Evidence-based prescribing practice

The prescribing workbook is an Adobe form document and works best with Adobe Acrobat. However, you should also be able to access it with other apps, or print it out as a hard copy.
The activities are optional and feedback is sought on whether further pages (e.g. personal formulary) would be useful. Please use the link to provide feedback and request extra pages be added as separate resources.
*Please note: this workbook embeds the previous model (RAPID CASE) and will be updated April 2025
A Padlet is available on its own page in this resource, accessed via the link below or the tab at the top of the page. It is a way to view and share useful resources with each other.
You will find recommended reading and other resource links at the bottom of the page for each topic area. The resources for this page are more general, for example prescribing textbooks that cover all related themes.
